Emory’s Carlos Museum Commemorating the Greco-Persian Battle of Marathon
Decatur Metro | September 17, 2010For someone who took a lot of Greek history in college and was drawn into this battle in Steven Pressfield’s 1998 novel “Gates of Fire”, this sounds pretty darn interesting. From Emory’s Carlos Museum…
The Michael C. Carlos Museum marks an important anniversary of one of the most famous battles in European history, the Battle of Marathon. Two thousand five hundred years ago, in 490 BC, a small Greek force defeated a much larger invading Persian army at Marathon. Emory will convene a weekend symposium, “Immortal Light: The Battle of Marathon and its Athenian Legend”, and hold a 2.62 mile race through the Emory campus to commemorate this event.
Andrew Stewart, professor of Greek Art at the University of California, Berkeley, will deliver the keynote address for the symposium, “Go tell the Spartans . . .War and the Warrior in Archaic Greek Art”, on Friday September 24 at 7:00 pm. The symposium continues Saturday afternoon, September 25, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Seven Emory faculty will present short papers highlighting the importance of the battle and its electrifying impact on the society and artistic production of the time. Featured speakers include Niall Slater, professor of Latin and Greek, with “Aristophanes and comedic responses to Marathon”, Cindy Patterson, professor of History, with “Herodotus & Marathon: Myth and Memory”, and Jasper Gaunt, Carlos Museum’s curator of Greek and Roman art, with “Heroes at Marathon: The great burial mound at the battlefield and other Athenian dedications.”
