Less Severe MARTA Cuts Still Affect Decatur
Decatur Metro | June 8, 2010MARTA will hold another public hearing tonight at 7pm at the Maloof Auditorium at 1300 Commerce Drive in downtown Decatur to discuss the revised “less severe” cuts/alterations to bus and rail service.
The following bus routes that run through Decatur will still be affected. (Routes in GREEN include the original modifications. Routes in BLUE have “refined” modifications based on rider feedback. Routes in RED are proposed for elimination.)
Route 2 – Proposed modification include Route 2 maintain service from North Ave. Station to Ponce de Leon Ave. and N. Highland Ave. Route 2 will then operate via N. Highland Ave., North Ave. (Outbound) Freedom Parkway (Inbound) and Moreland Ave. From Moreland Ave. Route 2 will assume the Caroline St., Marion Pl. and La France St. to Edgewood Candler Park Station segments currently serve by Route 28. Service will no longer be provided from Avondale Station to Ponce de Leon Ave and N. Highland Ave.
Route 8 – Partial Restoration‐ proposed modification include Route 8 maintain current routing from Brookhaven Station to E. Ponce de Leon Ave. at N. Decatur Rd. Route 8 will then continue N. Decatur Rd. assume the Glendale Rd., Chapel St., 7th Ave., Cedar St., N. Clarendon Ave., N. Avondale Rd. and E. College Ave. to Avondale Station segments currently served by Route 122.
Route 15 – Proposed modification include Route 15 maintain current service from Decatur Station to Clevemont Rd and Clevemont Court with selective trips operating via the Gallery at South DeKalb. Service to Clifton Springs Health Center will no longer be provided by Route 15, instead modification of Route 114 will provide service to Clifton Springs Health Center.
Route 18 – Discontinue Route ‐ Refer to proposed modification of Route 86 for Hosea Williams segment. Refer to Routes 21 & 99 for Grady Hospital service. Refer to proposed modification of Route 123 for service between Oakview Rd. and Decatur Station segments. Service will no longer be provided on Estoria St., Fulton Terrace, Maudlin St., Stovall St., Wylie St., Whiteford Ave., Hardee St., Hardee Circle, Foote St., and Fifth Ave.
Route 19 - Proposed modification include Route 19 maintain current service between Decatur Station along Clairmont Rd. to Dresden Dr. Route 19 will then continue Clairmont Rd. terminating at Chamblee Station instead of Brookhaven Station. Additionally, selective trips to the North DeKalb Health Center currently provided by Route 139 will now be provided by Route 19 . Refer to Route 25 for service along the Peachtree Rd. to Brookhaven Station segment. Service will no longer be provided on Dresden Drive.
Route 22 – Proposed for Discontinuation. Connections to the East Lake Station will be restored by the modified Routes 24, and 86. Connections to the Atlanta‐DeKalb Human Services Center are maintained by modifications to Route 24. Most eliminated segments fall within 1/4‐mile of proposed service. Service to Wal‐Mart will continue to be provided by Route 74. Access to Wal‐ Mart from Route 34 is within 1/4‐mile for passengers coming from the East.
Route 24 - Partial Restoration‐ Proposed modification include Route 24 maintain current service from East Lake Station to East Lake Dr. and Hosea Williams Dr. From Hosea Williams Dr. Route 24 will then operate to 2nd Ave., Glenwood Ave., East Lake Blvd. returning to Hosea Williams Dr. assuming the Mayson Ave. to Edgewood Candler Park Station segment currently served by Route 18. Additionally, Route 24 will provide service along Kirkwood Rd., Delano Dr. and Sisson Ave. inbound to East Lake Station. Refer to modification of Route 123 for service along the Midway Rd., Carter Rd., Fairlee Dr., Line St., White Oak Dr. Belvedere Lane and Rupert Rd. segments Service will no longer be provided along Howard St. and College Ave.
Route 36 - Partial Restoration‐ Proposed modification include Route 36 maintain current service from Avondale Station. From Avondale Station Route 36 will operate via E. Ponce de Leon Ave. to N. Decatur Rd. From N. Decatur Rd. Route 36 will assume current routing to N. Highland Ave. Route 36 will then operate via N. Highland Ave. to Virginia Ave. Route 36 will then assume the Virginia Ave., Monroe Dr., 8th St., Charles Allen Dr., 10th Street to Midtown Station segments currently served by Route 45. Midtown Station will be the new terminus for Route 36. Service will no longer be provided along E. Morningside Dr .
Route 75 - No proposed modification to the current route
Route 114 – Proposed modification include Route 114 maintain current service from Avondale Station to Clifton Springs Rd. and Flat Shoals Rd. Route 114 will now terminate at the Clifton Springs Health Center. Refer to Route 15 for service along Panthersville Rd. Refer to Route 74 for service along Clifton Church Rd. Refer to modification of Route 34 for service along Clifton Springs Rd. between Clifton Church Rd. and Panthersville Rd. Service will no longer be provided along Flat Shoals Rd. and Clifton Springs Rd. between
Route 120 - Proposed modification include Route 120 operate from Avondale Station assuming the N. Arcadia Ave., Winn Way and N. Decatur Rd. to Ponce de Leon segments currently served by Route 125. Route 120 will maintain current routing along E. Ponce de Leon Ave. between N. Decatur Rd. to N. Hairston Rd. Route 120 will then assume the Mountain Industrial Blvd., Hugh Howell Rd., Idlewood Rd., Sarr Parkway and Greer Circle segments currently served by Route 121. Refer to modification of Route 121 for service along N. Hairston Rd., Memorial Dr., W. Mtn. Dr., and East Ponce de Leon Ave. Refer to modification of Route 36 for service along E. Ponce de Leon Ave. between N. Decatur Rd. and Avondale Station. Service will no longer be provided on 4th St. and Manor Dr.
Route 122 – Proposed for Discontinuation. Productive segments for this route are covered by Route 121 (Memorial Dr), Route 125 (N Indian Creek Dr), Route 75 (Glendale Dr at N Decatur and Cedar St). Eliminated segments along College Ave, N Avondale Rd, N Clarendon Ave, Glendale Rd north of N Decatur Rd, Church St, Northern Ave, Indian Creek Way, and Memorial College Ave predominantly fall within the 1/4‐mile service boundary.
Route 123 – Partial Restoration‐ Proposed modification include Route 123 maintain current routing from North DeKalb Mall to Decatur Station. From Decatur Station Route 123 will assume the Swanton Way, Commerce Dr., W. Trinity Pl., S/N McDonough St., W. Hill St., Oakview Rd., Fifth Ave. to Hosea Williams Dr. segments currently served by Route 18. From Hosea Williams Rd. Route 123 will then assume the S. Candler St., Midway Rd., Carter Rd., Fairlee Dr., Line St., White Oak Dr., Capistrana Place, San Gabriel Ave., and Belvedere Lane segments currently served by Route 24. Service will no longer be provided from Decatur Station to Edgewood/ Candler Park Station.
Route 125 – Proposed modification include Route 125 maintain current service from Northlake Mall to N. Decatur Rd at Northern Ave. Route 125 will then continue Northern Ave., Memorial Dr., Kensington Rd terminating at Kensington Station instead of Avondale Station . Refer to modification of Route 120 for service from Avondale Station along N. Arcadia Ave., Winn Way and N. Decatur Rd. to E. Ponce de Leon Ave. segments. Service will no longer be provided to Montreal Circle

I’ll take a possibly controversial position and say I don’t mind that the 123 might be discontinued from Decatur Station to Candler Park/Edgewood.
That bus came so infrequently that it’s always been just as fast for me to talk 10-15 minutes to the East Lake MARTA.
Did anyone attend the MARTA Public Meeting last night at Maloof Auditorium? Has anyone seen / heard any feedback from the event…? I can’t find anything on AJC or local news sites…

The #18 and #22 are still totally eliminated. Without seeing a map of the modifications of the other nearby routes, it is still really hard for me to picture what service will be like in the South Decatur area. This will also, no doubt, have a huge negative impact on overall ridership at the East Lake Station. I wonder if closure of that station will be in the cards next.
I read somewhere recently that East Lake had the fewest gate entries of all the MARTA train stations.
I wonder how much money closing a station saves.
I knew it had the least of the 3 Decatur stations, but didn’t realize it was the least of the whole system. Wouldn’t be suprised though!
Uh, oh. This station is a lifesaver for Decatur commuters when the weather is too inclement or we’re too tardy to walk to the Decatur station. It has plenty of parking and I’ve never run into any crime or hassle or concerning incident there over several years.
I wonder how attendance at Fernbank Museum and Science Center will be affected.
Is there still parking in the Avondale Station lots off of College Ave.? I went to park there Sun. to go to the Braves game and there were no cars anywhere so I didn’t turn in.
