Decatur Looking To Implement Online Tax System
Decatur Metro | May 20, 2010An interesting blurb from page 29 of Decatur’s 2010-2011 city budget…
Priority Two: Online Taxes
The Revenue division has reviewed proposals and viewed demonstrations from a number of vendors for online tax information. The division is prepared to move forward with a particular vendor that will provide the ability to view tax accounts, re‐print tax bills and eventually pay taxes over the Internet. This will be an enhancement to our customers who must call, email or visit the office during regular business hours to obtain tax information today.
Whew! You scared me there for a minute, until I got to the actual post. Your Twitter headline led me to think maybe Decatur wanted to be avant garde in charging taxes base on how active they were online. Don’t laugh. This has been considered at the federal level and by a number of states.
How would a government body even go about attempting to do that?
They don’t even have usage data. They’d have to get that from the individual internet service providers…and that’s something those companies have been fighting tooth and nail for quite a while now.
Finally!
Thank goodness! As someone who has to deal with obtaining tax information for work, this would be a welcome change! Let’s say going to city hall in person is not always…productive.
The local Realtor world is smiling:):):):):)
i can pay my property taxes online for the county but not the city…. I would have assumed it was the opposite until i moved here
