Quizno’s Closes, Future Name of Quizno’s Plaza Unknown

January 31, 2010 | 11:26 pm

It must be January.  The closings continue.

Dave wrote in late this afternoon…

Quizno’s has up and gone. There is a sign on the door thanking their customers and explaining that their rent was increased. It appears that all the kitchen equipment has been removed.

Seems like the landlord monopolists might want to rethink all these rent increases…..

    Yes, they’re toasted.

Well played, Brad. Well played indeed.

Who knows if the rent is really increasing? That is often the stated reason when a retail outlet closes, but maybe they just weren’t doing the business. It’s an easy scapegoat.

I wonder what the retail vacancy rate is now in downtown Decatur.

I think a Thai and Sushi place would work well there.

And a playground with age appropriate equipment for 4th and 5th graders

I would love to see a good bakery open in downtown. Alon’s makes some great breads. :)

No fair! I already have dibs on any hypothetical Alon’s-quality bakery that opens to go in the old Victory Vintage Home spot!

I heard a manager complain that their outdoor business was literally killed by the fake bird noises.

  7. Eric says:

Good riddance. The few times I went there, the proprietor was a jerk and the food only so-so. I was also always surprised by how expensive it was, too.

My husband said the same thing. And they never honored coupons.

I understand the venting at Landlords. I don’t think anyone grows up stating, “I don’t wanna be a fireman, I want to be a Landlord!”

However, I happen to think that they may be raising rents. Why? Well, this isn’t scientific at all, but I have two friends that 10 years ago would NEVER consider living intown. Now? Both of them want to move to Decatur. Why? Good schools, great businesses (for the most part) and a great vibe.

Perhaps as the suburbs decay, this migration will increase, and the Landlords are just being schrewd.

    (Why did I capitalize “landlords”?)

    I have to agree with Eric…poor food…poor attitude…poor customer service…see ya!

But what do we call the plaza now??

      Bodega Bay?

      • macarolina says:

ParkerCross, do you have Sonoma County connections?

        I vote for Grackle Square.

    • Brad Steel says:

      Now Leasing Plaza?
      Vacancy Square?
The Strip Center Where Quizno’s Used to Reside sounds classy. And “classy” is that which for Decatur hankers.

      I know… The Grange Plaza

    • smalltowngal says:

Keep calling it Quizno’s Plaza. If there’s one thing at least some Decatur-ites love, it’s coded ways to tell who’s been one for how long. Besides, place names that reference vanished landmarks are one way a community maintains connections with the past. The Quizno’s association will be supplanted once another landmark takes root in that location, meanwhile continuity is a subconscious comfort.

Petrhaps the Devry students would like to call it Noquiz’s Plaza.

Although I’m a loyal customer of the Subway on E. Ponce I’d die and go to Heaven if a Jersey Mike’s opened up in that old Quiznos spot.

It’s always sad to see businesses close, especially when we know and love the owners, but I can’t say I’m secure enough in my own landlord-skills (since I don’t own or operate ANY commercial property) to give advice to Cartel or any of the other lords-of-the-land on what they should be doing to rents.

I never, not once, patronized that Quiznos, so I cannot comment on their service or prices.
But I do own property, and I can tell you that the profit margin on rentals isn’t great. I’m barely breaking even (paying note, insurance and taxes) on my city of Decatur residential rental property, and that’s with me doing most of the labor for free, and not counting all of my expenses.

But there are sure some bargains to be had for those who want to purchase property in this attractive little city.

Please, just don’t let Yogurt Tap go out of business.

Isn’t there a credit union near that plaza?

I used to eat at Quiznos quite often, and will miss them. I hate that so many folks had bad experiences there–mine were always positive.

Since I moved my office over the summer, I’ve only seem to eat on the square for meetings, and Quiznos never came up for those types of things. Anil, the owner there, seemed hard working to me and was always supportive in my hare-brained schemes.

We need a Dave’s Cosmic Subs. Or, rather, I need one–right now.

Interestingly, as I was leaving Sweet Melissa’s earlier, a guy stopped to ask me where Quiznos was. He was quite disheartened to learn that they were closed, and I referred him to Subway (only afterwards did I realize I could’ve suggested Sammiches ‘n Stuff).

For those that didn’t see the original sign (likely removed by the landlord immediately), here’s the photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mentalize/4320798398/
