Mary Alice Kemp Retires From City Commission Tonight
Decatur Metro | December 21, 2009As noted by TheDNO, tonight marks the last Decatur city commission meeting of 2009, which means that this meeting will be the last for commissioner Mary Alice Kemp before she retires from her post. Incoming District 2 commissioner Patti Garrett takes the reins as of January 4, 2010.
Feel free to write your well-wishes below!
We all owe a big thanks to Commissioner Kemp. She’s done a great job over the years, in what is often a pretty thankless task.
You may have complaints with some City of Decatur policies, but there are few municipalities in a better position for long term smart growth, with a better quality of life, and a more stable financial footing than Decatur.
That don’t happen by accident, and our commission’s hard work is a big part of that.
Thanks Mary ALice for giving so much to Decatur.
BTW, DM, I believe it is “reins”, not reigns.
It could be either.
Dang it. Did I do iit again!?
Being stuck in a foreign city with no way out and limited sleep apparently resurrects bad habits.
Where are you????
Berlin, I believe.
Mary Alice has seemed to serve Decatur very well in her years on the commission. I wonder what changes if any we will see with Patti on board.
Feeling my oats today, so I will press the point.
Reign refers to a period of time or dynasty.
Rein is part of horse tack. So in the DM context, it should be rein, as DM has corrected above: “takes the reins”.
Best wishes, Mary Alice! Thanks for your dedication and your commitment to making Decatur a better city over the years!
I don’t think I have ever been to a Decatur event where Mary Alice did not make an appearance. She’s always supportive. Thank you, Mary Alice. We will miss you.
whats with the two second light at church st and sycamore street..seriously and the 4 hour light at commerce by fellini’s?? oh and no turn light on college and commerce…let’s think about our lights being more efficient!
The one @ Commerce near Fellini’s has always been that way – surprised you’re just noticing and/or commenting about it.
Likewise Church and Sycamore.
And, the lack of a turn light at Commerce/Columbia and College has been much discussed.

Three cheers for Mary Alice. My first friend in Decatur. A great ambassador for the city and a great human being.
