“Drop Dead Diva” Filmed in Decatur Premieres Sunday

July 9, 2009 | 9:47 am

Make no mistake about it.  The AJC is stoked about movie and TV filming in Georgia.  While entire counties now go without local coverage, the amount of stuff written about Lifetime’s locally filmed “Drop Dead Diva is eye-popping.  Did you know that Paula Abdul and Liza Minnelli were guest-stars?  Of course you did!

So needless to say, it was in the AJC that I discovered that the Lifetime pilot will air this Sunday at 9pm.  Much of this episode was filmed in Decatur and Midtown, so make sure to set your Tivos/DVRs/VCRs/recordable laserdiscs, so you get all giddy about seeing all your favorite Decatur locations in HD.

Oh, and the other thing I learned from the AJC’s in-depth article: filming has now permanently moved away from Decatur/Midtown to Peachtree City because of “traffic”.  They’ve even built “a courtroom modeled after a vintage one in Decatur, save for the marble, which is not earthquake-code compliant” down in the golf-cart mecca.  ehm…Lame!…cough..cough…

I just saw the trailer for the show on youtube.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AUCSeyhkSs

It looks like they are showing it as Los Angeles. I spotted one brief moment that was filmed in Glenwood Park — car hitting a truck full of grapefruits. That was filmed below my friend’s condo.

But otherwise, it’s not very identifiable as Atlanta or Decatur. Shame…

I figured I’d show willing and DVR this show in an effort search out any Decatur landmarks. It seems I faired worse than Russ though, as didn’t notice anything I recognized – but in fairness, I can’t say I was glued to the TV!

It’s nice to know this is filmed locally (or was, before they headed off to the land of golf carts and man made lakes), but I’m not sure this show is going to make my weekly list of required viewing – no snobbery intended, as I’m usually pretty big of lo-brow banal shows!

Well, when you’re one of the 10 Best Small towns to live in (see other DM post about Peachtree City) you can’t help but attract the big-time Hollywood types.
