Commission Meeting: Sidewalk Improvement Phase II
Decatur Metro | March 2, 2009The working meeting prior to tonight’s City Commission meeting will include a presentation of Phase II of our sidewalk improvement plan. Streets that will see new or improved sidewalks are listed on page 4 and 5 of the meeting’s supplemental materials. And if you’re interested in knowing on which streets at least one person has objected to having sidewalks added, that would be on the bottom of page 2 of the materials.
The commission meeting also features awarding the Glendale Park improvements contract to the low bidder: Sports Turf Company.
Also the commission will hear a proposal by ZiptoGreen.com, which works with local governments in doing the following (according to their website)…
Connect citizens to your energy conservation programs via Zip codes
Provide a forum to showcase your plans and successes
Provide easy access to local energy efficiency businesses
Help promote local conservation groups, initiatives and events
Does anyone know what the Ponce de Leon Heights Traffic Report is that was dropped from the agenda? Is it for the conjestion around the park area or is it for general pass through traffic at high speeds?
I was wondering the same thing nittany. I’ll ask and get back to ya.
Nittany, according to Amanda at the city, the Ponce heights traffic report is part of the 315 building development project. To recap: in discussions about traffic issues resulting from the new development, cut-through traffic thru Ponce Heights (mainly on Coventry) was a concern. As a result, the city commission agreed to look into traffic calming measures for the neighborhood. The City Manager agreed to have a recommendation of how to proceed by March 2nd, but got stuck in Chicago due to the weather and was unable to finish the proposal for Monday’s meeting. According to Amanda, at the next commission meeting on March 16th.
I’m curious to see what will be said, since the most common traffic calming measure is speed humps, and both Coventry and Nelson Ferry already have those.
The Decatur Focus reported that state DOT permission would be needed to create the sidewalk between park drive and pharr road on south candler st. I hope they get it. We want that sidewalk. But i can’t really discern from the report whether it’s been approved.
now if we can only get the light at Nelson Ferry and West Ponce to change green in less than five minutes … wishful thinking there …
But for all you people down on speed humps and bumps, just try getting into your car on a major thruway like Coventry … before bumps I was practically roadkill, and that was from the postal trucks cutting through! (by the way, I’m at least 20 points if you hit me!)
Agreed on both points cranky. I really don’t understand the length of that Ponce/Nelson Ferry light. Its really obscene. I guess that’s a complaint to direct to DeKalb County?
Also, I don’t think anyone is complaining about the bumps. I love them! Those streets are too damn wide, even with parking on both sides of the street, not to have them.
Thanks, DM. I’m curious as well given that the speed humps are already installed on the most heavily used “cut through” roads. I’m sure that there will be some recommendation to install speed humps on Clarion and Woodlawn which will do nothing to curb the cut throughs but make my drive much longer.
Now if only they would address the parking situation by the park…..oh, wait….that was another thread.
I’m pretty sure if there is already speed humps, the next step is to make you take Ritalin before you drive on said road.
