Warning: Zombies Attack Hi-Tech Gas Station March 2nd/3rd
February 22, 2009 | 11:03 amAs a resident of North Candler St, Andrew recently received a letter from Sony Pictures alerting him that scenes from the upcoming film “Zombieland” would be shot at our own lovely Hi-Tech Gas Station on March 2nd and 3rd.
According to Sony’s letter, the “action/comedy” movie stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Superbad’s Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin and is “the story of one man’s search for love in a world run amuck with…you guessed it…zombies!”
In addition to filming at Hi-Tech, a short scene will also be filmed at the intersection of N.Candler and Sycamore. This will require the closure of N. Candler between E. Howard and Sycamore for approximately 4 hours.
If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times – we must stop arguing over development and address our rampant zombie population! Forget C-2/R-60! Smart growth ain’t all that smart when you got no brains!

Perhaps DHS will release the senior working to “create evacuation plan for a zombie apocalypse” those days so she can learn from the movie.
Don’t forget that high density downtown housing makes for excellent snipers perches. Now, take out the one that looks like Burt Reynolds.
It appealed to my sense of the bizarre to be able to (truthfully) tell my boss I’d be late for work because I was hemmed in the house by killer zombies – OK, I don’t know if they’re “killer” zombies; but I’d like to think the are!
I’m applauding you right now. Hilarious.
It just upsets me that Decatur doesn’t have more affordable housing for zombies. Do y’all realize how hard it is for the zombies in our population to get and keep decent paying jobs?
As we are within spitting distance of the Decatur Cemetery, we’ve been preparing for the inevitable zombie invasion for some time. You have to think about these things when you live on Ponce Court. Palm trees and zombies.
Keylime… you know just because they are green and moldy, smell of rotting flesh, and want to kill/maim us is no reason for us to be excluding them from our community. They are lucky to have you as an ally.
Palm Trees and Zombies… sounds like an old 80’s pop tune…. I wonder if Michael Jackson sang that one?
Actually, it sounds like a 50’s sci-fi flick. Perhaps “Attack of the Killer Coconuts”.
Some towns just say they welcome diversity – Decatur lives and breathes it – zombies and all…
Well, to date there hasn’t been that big a zombie problem within the city limits of Decatur per se. But it is easy to tell that zombie activity is up in the neighborhoods and communities surrounding Decatur. And we are of course all aware that zombies don’t necessarily respect (or understand) jurisdictional boundries.
Question: Is this something the Neighborhood Watch program could help with?
Also, remember, if you are able to “neutralize” a zombie, the body can be composted along with your yard clippings. It helps the environment and saves you $$$ on trash bags!
Frankly, I find the term “zombies” degrading. Shouldn’t we use a more 21st century term that also recognizes their contributions to society.
I am thinking “the undead” would be much more politically correct.
I think they prefer heartbeatingly challenged.
I think we should probably go with “Undead Americans” isn’t that the PC these days? Do we have our police force trained in the ways to kill a zombie though? Someone should probably look into that. As I understand it from the documentary Shaun of the Dead that I watched, you can only kill them by “Removing the head or destroying the brain”.
Andrew, I would say that such treatment would violate their civil rights. I think that they need to have a trial before a jury of their undead peers first and then executed by lethal injection.
I guess that would make them “the un-undead.”
Or then again… I wonder if an executed zombie comes back as a really angry, ultra-powerful double undead “being”
Only in Decatur (and maybe Berkeley) could such a blog string exist.
keylime, I think the punishment would be to inject them with HGH to bring them back to life.
How about “formerly lived”? Or maybe “brain neutral”.
Boy they’re really gonna drag the schools down.
City of homes, schools, places of worship, and roving bands of the Undead? Gonna need a larger welcome sign.
We’d have to change the little sign with the three cute buildings to include a little crypt too.
Oh, so we just leave vampires (the living dead) and werewolves (the furry dead) out of the community discourse. I wonder how that make them feel?
This will REALLY slow down the line at Taqueria del Sol!
[...] Zombies will attack Hi-Tech Gas Station on March 2&3 [...]
From the casting call it sounds like they will fit in nicely in our little town…
“Our zombies are ferocious, infected people that move erratically. They are diseased, as opposed to undead. These are not the lumbering walking dead of Romero’s zombie movies, but instead the super jacked up 28 Days Later / Dawn Of The Dead (2004) zombies. They are scary and gnarly and gross. They have the abilities of amped up versions of people, similar to when your child is trapped under a car and you lift the car off of them. I see them moving somewhat similar to velociraptors, always alert, sniffing the air for prey, and when they strike, they strike fast and furious. Their movement should be somewhat unnatural, to indicate that they are not human, and because the disease is coursing through their veins, a certain level of jerkiness and a crazed look will reflect their nature like a rabid dog.”
I was thinking more like a middle school student.
Just noticed there’s a Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness Facebook Cause with over 11k members. May be time to join!
Drove by this morning on my way to work and the station was a hive of activity. They’ve repainted it green (just in time for St. Patrick’s Day!) and grips were all over the place sprucing it up. There was also a fleet of emergency vehicles in the parking lot. Wonder if those are for use in the shoot or just there in case of injury?
They repainted the station?
Wow…nothing like urban revitalization through movie production!
Anyone want to shoot a movie on Church north of Ponce??
It’s not only been repainted, but this evening it had a new name: Gas n’ Gulp. Not great, but then “Hi-Tech” wasn’t exactly poetry either.
Pumps also appear to have been painted green. May have been other changes but couldn’t see because it was dark.
They actually completely refurnished the station inside and out. I was in the shoot as an extra. No zombies in the scenes shot in Decatur. This was apparently before the “zombie apocalypse”. Fun shoot, though. I was on set with a genu-wine Oscar nominee (Abby Breslin).
BTW, zombies are already well represented in the city council. : )
Does anyone know if they’ve stopped shooting?
They were shooting (or at least staging, storing LOTS of equipment) last night in downtown Decatur on the strip between J. Christopher’s and Noodle.
Actually, they might not hold up the Taqueria del Sol queue too much… Being brain dead, they’re not going to be able to devote much thought to what they want to order – although I’ll admit they might have a problem following the ordering rules!
Sounds like a great logo for a Decatur “Zombie Ball”!
sounds like a typical college kid…
Oh, the link would’ve helped…

The production moved to Morrow today and tomorrow. It will continue to move around for the next six weeks or so.
I wonder how much of the refurb will be left? Maybe that was the deal they made with the owners, to make it all nice in exchange for permission to shoot there.
Can’t for the life of me figure out how they settled on that particular station. Weird. But cool.
