Is Old Courthouse Staircase Haunted?

November 15, 2008

Scott Snapped this Shot of the G.R.A.S.P Truck

A local group of ghost-hunters plans to shut themselves up in the old courthouse this evening to find out.

I’d say “The Death House” on Sycamore is a more likely candidate.  :-)

    that’s quite a name for a house!

    So did they find anything?

If ghosts exist (dont want to start that debate!) I have got to think that Decatur, as one of the older cities in the area, would have to have some ghosts.

or anywhere civil war battles were fought in the area.

Its that great old house closest to the Avondale MARTA station parking lot that was moved there by MARTA when the rail line came through town. SOS could tell you about it. It sat neglected until very recently, but now it looks like its being restored…thankfully!

But the reason its called the Death House is because the original family’s name was “Death”…not for any malicious reason! I was just being cute.

Well, you definitely piqued my interest! I checked wikipedia and they said the same thing, that the name of the original owners were named “Death”. Yes, it does look like someone is doing some work on it. Great house, will be interesting to see what the current owners do with it. Thanks, love your blog!

I have always heard that the family name was d’Ath (as in de Ath). Calling all Decatur historians to fill in the details!

I wanna know what their findings were!

That’s probably true Dee….Its hard to believe that their name would have been straight up “Death”. Regardless of whether their ancestors were undertakers or not!

[...] Gchat, Gena!), Buckhead was — gasp — called overdeveloped, and the DeKalb County Courthouse was visited by Peter, Ray and Egon. Oh yeah, and some guy who lost a presidential election visited. And there [...]

No, the name was Death. They were Harry and Vivian Death. Mr Death died presumably because of the stress of selling and moving the house. The family bought a house in Avondale Estates after moving from Sycamore St. Mrs. Death is now dead also. I had heard the name was pronounced Deeth like Heath candy bars, but no, I visited Mrs. Death and she opened the door and greeted me with “Hi, I’m Vivian Death”. She had a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Deloris Death.

“The Death House” is one of my old friend’s houses. It’s just underrepaired. I used to go over there all the time until we went to college. It’s still owned by his family. It’s not haunted. Although watching “Amityville Horror” over there as a kid was pretty scary…
