Decatur School Annexation Map and Presentation

January 16, 2008 | 9:58 am

Ask and ye shall receive!

Yesterday a commenter asked if a map existed showing the city’s proposed north and east annexation.  Well, thanks to a link found on the Oakhurst Message Board, I found this presentation by Rosser International given to the school board regarding the annexation, which shows not only the proposed new boundaries of the city, but also a breakdown of how many students live in each area.

While this map (click it for an even larger version or go to the presentation)  shows the expansion north and east as described in the GoDeKalb article, it also shows an annexation to the northeast, up DeKalb Industrial to N. Decatur and east on Ponce to DeKalb Industrial Way (where the street where Paddywax and Wag-a-Lot reside).

This presentation seems to indicate that the school system is already many steps in to analyzing this issue and the rest of up are playing catch up.

A lot of interesting info on our neighborhoods in this presentation.  Be sure to check it out!

Great find! Just what I’ve been looking for.

Thanks David…it was actually kind of an elusive document. The link on the Oakhurst message board actually links to the wrong page of the CDS agenda…so I had to look through a bunch of meeting notes until I found the referenced presentation.

I own and live in a home located in the study area. While we might remain in the minority, my wife and I are extremely excited about this proposal. We live in Decatur Terrace between Winnona Park and Avondale Estates, this is often referred to as “No Man’s Land”. An annexation of our beloved area means more to us than just a “higher tax rate”. We invested in this area several years ago with the hopes that this would some day take place. Now with 2 young kids coming of age, I would easily pay triple my current tax if that meant a better school system. Forrest Hills elementary school is scheduled to close in a few short years.

An anexation of this area means a better environment, less neighborhood riff raff, and a cleaner business district. I mean how many used car lots and run down muffler shops can one district endure? And for the rising amount of vacant homes in the area, an annexation would most certianly lure those interested in reaping the benefits of the city as well as exposing the potential of the area.

We’ve talked to several neighbors that feel the same way that we do. I could see this proposal passing quite easily. BRING IT ON!!

I live in the City of Avondale Estates (which I think is a wonderful city) so I am not affected by the annexation. I were though I would be for it 100%. I think it is a great opportunity for people who live in unincorporated areas near Avondale/Decatur to have a better opportunity to influence their growth and finally have a government that hears them. Dekalb Co. Government is a 800lb gorilla and these small areas targeted for annexation get no respect. My only reservation and regret is that the City of Avondale didn’t move first.
Oh yeah, for those with kids, Decatur schools are a step up in my opinion!
    Good Luck Decatur!
